Emotional Hunger vs Physical Hunger: Understanding the Difference

Hunger is often described as a simple biological signal: your body needs energy, so you eat. In reality, eating behaviours are far more complex. Alongside physical hunger, many people also experience emotional hunger, which refers to the desire to eat in response to emotions, habits, or psychological cues rather than true physiological needs.


Homeostatic hunger is driven by the body's physiological need for energy, and its primary mechanisms take place in the central nervous system, where hormones and hunger-related peptides send metabolic information to the hypothalamus. (1)


In contrast, hedonic hunger is less dependent on metabolic need and is driven by the brain's reward and motivation circuits in response to emotions (1), whereas emotional hunger overlaps with hedonic hunger but is often associated with negative emotions. (2)


Understanding the difference between emotional and physical hunger can help improve body awareness, eating habits, and overall relationship with food.


What does the evidence say?


  • Reviews of psychometric, experimental, and naturalistic studies suggest that emotions do not affect everyone’s eating behaviour in the same way. Negative emotions often reduce intake overall, but in some people, especially with higher emotional eating tendencies or those more sensitive to food reward, they can increase intake, particularly of energy-dense foods. Additionally, restrictive eating patterns may increase vulnerability to emotional eating. (2)

  • A review from 2023 investigated the relationship between emotional eating and overweight/obesity. Although the included studies had various limitations, findings suggested that emotion dysregulation was associated with higher psychological stress and emotional eating in overweight individuals.   • Further evidence suggests that emotional eating or hedonic hunger is often strongly driven by the brain's reward system. The anticipated reward from food can significantly increase the desire to eat and even trigger physiological responses such as increased saliva production. (4)

  • Emotional hunger may therefore feel more urgent, specific and emotionally charged than physical hunger, which typically develops more gradually in response to energy needs.

  • Emotional eating responses vary significantly between individuals, meaning not everyone reacts to emotions in the same way.

  • Practising “decentering” techniques or mindfulness eating may help reduce the intensity of cravings by recognising them as temporary mental events rather than urgent physiological needs.
